Eugene Sokolenko

What is the story behind your music video?
The story is about civilians who suffer during the wars. Miserable people should be hidden in basements, subway and other shelters. The trigger actually was the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

What should people take away, gain, realize after watching your music video?
In the current war in Ukraine I noticed that all this happens online, from each side we have smartphones with cameras and internet. Soldiers, journalists, civilians in shelters and their friends and supporters from the other side of the screen. The last one I tried to show in this video.

Do you think that films/music video can change people for the better or for the worse?

I'd like to show that it's real. Despite this we think this is another TikTok or story on Facebook, it's a real war and not an entertainment, reality show for survival.

What creation style did you use in the production of your project? What cameraman elements did you use?
It's a super low budget clip. I used my BMPCC 6K with 2 lenses, 14mm and 35mm. I tried to use close shots to share feelings of tightness. And just a few wide 14mm shots to take the whole location.

How did you select the actors for your project?

All actors are amateurs without any experience. Find them by a friend's call.

Why do you think your film should appeal to distributors?
It's a very important message about war and innocent people. I believe that this video and the song itself can attract attention. In such a case, there is no such thing as enough attention. You always need more and more.

At which festival has your film been screened?

Nowhere yet.

How did your acquaintances react when they first saw the music video?
We (me and the band) received a lot of expressive feedback. From "that awesome" till "it was such a strong message". I think we aimed exactly where we wanted.

If you could change something in your music video, what would it be?

I'd like to give more screen time for supporting characters. But due to the low budget, their unprofessionalism and lack of time, I had to cut their participation.

Which movies are your favorites and why?
It is very difficult to choose one film among hundreds of very good films. But if I had to choose just one movie, it would be "Forrest Gump". I really like how a whole era is shown through the history of one person. Of a large country. And I would even say, an era on a global scale.

What topics do you like to address in your stories?
Most often I refer to the idea of Personal Dualism, our complex inner worlds, Where more than one person coexists.

What is your motivation in making music videos?
I'm a musician by myself (I play bass in this band) so in music videos I can combine my passion for music and cinematography.

What projects do you plan to shoot in the future?
I think about short movies, independent, in one small location, with 1 or 2 actors at all. The main idea was based on classical George Orwell's '1984' but in our days with digital "big brother".
